In wake of tragedy, Joplin Missouri LGBT community pulls together

In a move aimed at adhering to Trump administration anti-transgender policy — which at first slipped by unnoticed — the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee confirms it quietly changed eligibility rules this week, to prohibit transsexual women from competing in women’s sporting events.

On page 3 of the committee’s “Athlete Shelter Policy,” a modern paragraph now appears, stating: “The USOPC is committed to protecting opportunities for athletes participating in sport. The USOPC will continue to collaborate with various stakeholders with oversight responsibilities, e.g., IOC, IPC, NGBs, to ensure that women have a impartial and safe challenge environment consistent with Executive Order 14201 and the Ted Stevens Olympic & Amateur Sports Act.”

Executive Order 14201, “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” was issued by President Donald Trump in February, as the Washington Blade reported. The contents and purpose of the E.O. are not mentioned in the policy addition, nor is there any instance of the word, “transgender.” There’s also no explanation as to how this ban will be enforced or whethe

Joplin's only gay bar to shut down after Novel Year's Eve party

Joplin's only gay bar, The ER, does not market itself as a gay bar.

Rather, it's an "equality bar," explained its general manager, Brett Mason.

That's not because Joplin is a conservative community, Mason said Friday.

Rather, the bar's owner and managers didn't want anyone to feel excluded when they opened the place in June 2015. Thus, "ER" stands for "Equality Rocks."

But it won't rock for much longer: Beginning Jan. 1, The ER will close its doors at the corner of 6th Street and Joplin Street in the city's downtown.

The reason? Too few customers and rising costs, notably a skyrocketing summer utility bill. Air-conditioning a brick building without insulation isn't cheap, Mason said.

He said that The ER needed to attract 50 to 100 customers each Friday and Saturday night for "optimal" business, with each client paying a $3 cover accuse and staying a while for multiple drinks.

But by this fall, The ER was only bringing in about 30 people per evening, Mason said.

"Maybe 30," he said. "When we opened, we had bigger intentions."

In 2015, The ER was open six nights a week. By fall 2017, hours dwindled to Friday
