Key West is super gay!
The island's history as a gay destination dates back to the 1950s when well-known LGBTQ celebrities like Tennessee Williams, Gore Vidal, Jerry Herman, Leonard Bernstein, and Elizabeth Bishop have since made it their residence. Subsequently in 1983, Key West became the first place in the US to elect an openly gay mayor (Richard A. Heyman), then in 2000, the island's motto became: “One Human Family“.
Today, this remarkable small island in south Florida has become an incredible gay mecca – one of the most renowned, in fact, across the whole US!
We've visited Key West on several occasions and always had a blast, especially when hitting the gay bars of Duval Street. There are so many things to do for gay travelers and with regards to the hotels, it was never a case of ‘Please can we acquire a double bed', but more – ‘Which of these many gay hotels should we stay at on this trip?'

Gay Key West – the top gay hotels, resorts, bars, clubs & more
Key West is a bona fide gaytopia! Nestled at the southernmost tip of the United States, just 90 miles from Cuba and surrounded by the shimmering waters of the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other, how can such a tranquil setting be anything but liberal?
Over the centuries, Key West and the Florida Keys have been the ports of pirates, famous sailors, and later, the home of inspirational writers like Ernest Hemingway. Nowadays, it's the perfect blend of Caribbean flair and American spirit, where a chilled-out ‘live and enable live' approach to life dominates among its inhabitants. Not to mention, it has a flourishing gay scene away from pesky mainland politics.
This eclectic, delightful brief island has loads to give active travelers—kayaking, skydiving, shipwreck diving—and just the right amount of low-key activities in the establish of beaches, shops, and galleries for those who just need to dip their toes into the Caribbean in a familiar LGBTQ+-friendly environment.
