Gay & lesbian alliance against defamation

GLAAD (formerly an acronym for the Homosexual and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) is a left-of-center media monitoring group which promotes the favorable representation of LGBT figures in media. The group aims to “shape the narrative” on LGBT issues in show and in the news. GLAAD often pressures media creators and artists to “increase the quantity” of “diverse LGBT characters” in their works. The collective primarily operates in the United States, but runs international initiatives as skillfully.

History

GLAAD was founded in 1985, when a small collective of writers and reporters organized to protest the allegedly defamatory coverage of the AIDS crisis by the New York Post. After the initial disagree, GLAAD began targeting other media outlets. In 1987, the GLAAD successfully pressured the New York Times to transform its editorial policy to start using the term “gay” instead of “homosexual” in reference to gay people. In 1988, GLAAD activists on the West Coast began protesting purported discrimination in entertainment as good as in news media. The Gay and Woman loving woman Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), announced Sunday that it is changing its identify from Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to just GLAAD in an effort to extend its mission expression to include members of the gender diverse community. GLAAD is known for its efforts to curb anti-gay and sapphic media–an effort it now looks to extend to trans* and bisexual people.

GLAAD spokesperson Rich Ferraro said in an interview with MSNBC.com, “This is a reflection of the work we’re doing today, and a reflection of the work the male lover and lesbian society needs to be doing…our name was hindering that in many instances.”

Ferrero went on to comment on changing social stigma. “There contain been huge increases in support for gay and lesbians, and for marriage equality. We’ve noticed that trend and wondered how we could use the tactics that the gay and female homosexual community had used to get to today’s tipping aim [for the trans* community].”
