Maddie ziegler is gay
Who Should Tell Gender non-conforming Stories
A few weeks ago, my (straight [derogatory]) friend said something I consideration was genuinely eye-opening.
I had asked them if they had watched “The Fallout” on HBO Max. Upon them responding “no,” I jokingly asked if it was because of the kiss between Jenna Ortega and Maddie Ziegler’s characters. They said, “I don’t relate to gay content, so I don’t actively seek it out.”
There are two things I found fascinating about their statement.
First, I find myself relating to direct characters all the time. I like Fleabag from Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “Fleabag,” but I love her because of how relatable she is as a personality. Her struggles with self-worth and guilt are problems that we all tackle , and her sexuality is abundantly remove within her character’s frequent one-night stands. Even then, it could not express less to me.
Second, I for one, do seek out queer content. But how is it that when I do find it, the relationship is plagued with tragedy and often ends in death? Why, when allowed to write almost any plot for a queer character, is happiness deemed unattainable?

This review contains mild spoilers for Fitting In.
Molly McGlynn’s Fitting In opens with a quote from Simone De Beauvoir and a quote from Diablo Cody — Jennifer’s Body to be accurate. “Hell is a teenage girl,” the screen reads, and then the film goes on to show us its truth. Hell is a teenage girl, hell is being a teenage lady, hell is being a young woman, hell is being a person, hell is having a body.
The movie begins like a regular teen girl coming-of-age tale. Lindy (Maddie Ziegler) is an average girl who spends her days running track, bickering with her single mom (Emily Hampshire), talking about sex with her optimal friend Vivian (Djouliet Amara), and lusting after boys, specifically Adam (D’Pharoah Woon-A-Tai). Vivian is more experienced, something Lindy hopes to change as she and Adam get closer.
But at 17 years old Lindy has never had her period. She’s managed to ignore this until she goes to the gynecologist to obtain birth control and mentions it. A series of invasive tests later, she finds out she has MRKH syndrome which means she has no uterus and no vaginal canal.
With the assist of a strong performance from Ziegler, McGlynn allows Lindy to react to this news in a realist
