A Bit of Anchorage History

Initially, Anchorage was settled as a tent city in 1914, near the mouth of Ship Creek. For the first several decades of its existence, Anchorage was primarily a company town for the Alaska Railroad. Later due to expanded military presence and training and the use of natural resources in the area, Anchorage begins to grow. The city has continued to grow since that time, and today, it is known not only as a hub of thriving businesses an opportunity but is also widely known as the city that is the “cultural soul” of Alaska. With beautiful scenery, lots of opportunities, plenty to see and do, and a diverse, welcoming, and eclectic community – what’s not to love?

    Types of AA Meetings

    LGBTQ: Selected AA chapters focus on providing a safe room for the Gay community, and generally welcome LGBTQ+ allies. These groups prioritize members’ recovery and sobriety within a non-heteronormative context.

    Open: In Alaska, open AA meetings allow anyone from the group to learn more about the company and how it operates. This includes individuals looking to overcome an alcohol addiction as adv as their friends and loved ones. Nonalcoholics can participate as observers to understand the 12 step recovery program and how to address alcohol exploit disorder.

    Step Meeting: In Alaska AA centers, step meetings center around a 12 Step recovery program. AA members scan and talk about a particular step, how it applies to them, and their future goals.

    Gay Anchorage

    The largest capital in Alaska, Anchorage is dwelling to 40 percent of the state’s population. Only New York has a higher percentage of the state's population in its largest city. For travelers, it’s usually the first stop for those who've come to investigate the vast and wild expanse of Alaska.

    The city is known around the world for outdoor pursuits, such as the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Puppy Race each March. In December, when the nights get lengthy and cold, the November-December Anchorage International Film Festival, featuring ten days of the best international and independent cinema, provides a good excuse to stay indoors at the BearTooth TheatrePub.

    Anchorage is a small city with a small gay community. The few bars, as in most such cities, tend to mix everyone of all ages, genders and affinities together. There are also membership clubs to provide fellowship and organize events throughout the year. The annual June Alaska Pridefest events bring the whole rainbow community together.

    Alaska is somewhere that has been on our bucket list for a very long time. Whilst our knowledge is limited to glaciers, snow-capped mountains, whales and grizzly bears, every photo we see of the incredible landscape and wildlife just makes us more eager to visit!

    Whilst a lot of the states in America are well-known for being either very gay-friendly, or the complete opposite, ‘gay Alaska’ wasn’t something we knew anything about.

    Is Anchorage homosexual friendly?

    Nowadays, for the most part, people tolerate and even accept LGBTQ+ people. I should clarify that this is specific to Anchorage which might be the gayest municipality in Alaska. While a few other cities/towns have a small LGBTQ+ presence, the level of acceptance in remote areas is less than in the city.

    Same ടex marriage was legalized. However, there are still laws on the books that let active discrimination especially with regard to transgender persons.
