Malia Obama is voting for a fresh start.
As her Hollywood career takes off, Barack and Michelle Obama's oldest daughter has dropped her last identify in favor of her middle mention, officially going by Malia Ann for her newest film venture The Heart.
Fans did a double get after Malia's feather name was revealed in the Sundance Institute's "Meet the Artist" spotlight video, which introduced her as filmmaker Malia Ann, seemingly in an effort to distance herself from her powerful parents, who have also launched careers in entertainment with Higher Ground Productions.
Although the former president and first lady are now movie moguls, Michelle and Barack did not join the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this month, when Malia, 25, made her red carpet debut at the premiere of The Heart.
Malia described her project as "an odd little story, somewhat of fable, abut a male grieving the death of his mother after she leaves him an extraordinary request in her will," as she put it in her Sundance spotlight.

On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal across the U.S., declaring that refusing to execute so would violate the Constitution. Shortly after the high court’s landmark verdict, the Obama administration noted by lighting the Pale House in rainbow colors.
Now, more than three years after that historic Obergefell v. Hodges ruling, former first lady Michelle Obama revealed that she and her daughter Malia, then 16, snuck out of the White House that night to join in on the fun happening outside their residence.
“We made our way down a marble staircase and over red carpets, around the busts of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin and past the kitchen until suddenly we were outdoors,” the former first lady wrote in her fresh bestselling book, “Becoming.” “Malia and I just busted past the agents on duty, neither one of us making eye contact. The humid summer gas hit our faces. I could see fireflies blinking on the lawn. And there it was, the hum of the widespread, people whooping and celebrating outside the iron gates.”
“It had taken us 10 minutes to get out of our own hom

"["The Heart"] is an odd small story, somewhat of a fable, about a man grieving the death of his mother after she leaves him an rare request in her will," she explained in a Sundance Institute video introducing the short.
