TheBackstreetBoys were at a flamboyant show when they first realized they had a gay following.
"We did three or four songs, the crowd went nuts and I was standing next to this 6-foot-6 drag queen who gave me a hug and a kiss. I was beside myself, and that was when we first knew that we had a big gay following," A.J. McLean told Event Source in a recent interview. "I was just like, 'Wow, this is kind of friggin' crazy.' Thinking back on it, I've been in this business since I was 3 and I grew up in musical theater, so I was raised and surrounded by homosexual men and gay women. I was hardly around anyone straight."
In the interview, McLean talks about shaving his legs and dressing up in drag. As for any sort of gay rumors surrounding him or the pop community, he doesn't care.
"Everyone always says, 'When you look at a young man band, one of them has to be gay.' No, they don't. Instead of me being homosexual, I'm the fag hag," he said.

Speaking to Refinery29, A.J. says, “There is truly no surpass feeling then organism a father and seeing the watch on my daughters’ faces and…and how they look up to me…if I lost everything in my career, if Backstreet said no and we were done tomorrow, I would still be happy and satisfied being a satisfied father, period. And I am so thankful that I did not own boys.”
He continues, “I will also proceed on record by saying, and I told my wife this, I wish that both of my daughters are gay because that takes all p***s out of my life — I do not yearn to deal with boys ever. But if I execute have to, they’re going to own to go through quite a lot of trials to go through me because my daughters are my life.”

We did a show years ago in Ybor Capital in Tampa and Divine Brown — the girl who messed around with Hugh Grant support in the morning (laughs) — was hosting a kingly show. We actually had no notion.
