Terrence Howard Passed on Marvin Gaye Biopic Because He Didn't Want to Embrace a Man

Terrence Howard didnotwant to get it on in a Marvin Gaye biopic.

The Empire alum said he turned down playing the late tune icon in a movie because the role likely required him to touch a man.

"I wouldn't have been fit to do that," Howard admitted on the April 27 episode of Bill Maher's Club Random podcast. "That would f--k me. I would cut my lips off."

He continued, "If I kissed a man, I would cut my lips off."

The 56-year-old went on to explain that he wouldn't have been able to "fake it," noting, "I can't play that character 100 percent."

Howard added, "I can't surrender myself to a place that I don't understand."

Gaye died at age 44 after creature shot by his dad Marvin Homosexual Sr. in 1984. During his animation, he was married to Anna Gordy from 1963 to 1977 and to Janis Hunter from 1977 to 1982.

Terrence Howard said he turned down playing Marvin Gaye in a Lee Daniels-directed biopic after being told that the late singer was gay. 

The “Iron Man” star, 56, common the revelation on Sunday’s episode of Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast.

The conversation turned to Gaye after Howard confessed the “biggest mistake” of his career was not portraying Smokey Robinson in a movie about the Motown icon. 

Though Robinson, 85, asked Howard to play him, the thespian said he was in the midst of a “conversation with Lee Daniels about playing Marvin Gaye.” 

Maher, 69, argued that the narrative of the “Sexual Healing” hitmaker’s life was “much more interesting” than Robinson’s, and that Howard “would’ve been perfect as Marvin Gaye, and that is a story that needs to be told.”

    Marvin Gaye was an American singer, songwriter and producer.

    He was one of the main singers that created the Motown sound of the 1960s, first as a session performer and later as a solo artist. His Motown hits included 'How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)' and 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine', and duets with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Diana Ross and Tammi Terrell.

    In the 1970s, he recorded the albums What's Going On and Let's Get It On, becoming one of the first artists from Motown (along with Stevie Wonder) to break away from the company on his own merit.

    Born Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. on April 2, 1939 in Washington, D.C., the son of a Pentecostal preacher, singer Marvin Gaye would move on to turn into one of Motown Records’ most famous artists. Joining his first musical group in high school, the DC Tones, he dropped out of school when he was 17 to escape his father’s abuse. The troubled relationship with his father would carry on the rest of his life.

    Following a one-year stint in the U.S. Breeze Force, he returned to D.C. to join the Marquees, signing a shrink with Columbia. The Marquees morphed into Harvey and the Moonglows, led by Harvey Fuqua who would be instrumental in advancing Gaye’s career. It was through Fuqua, who had started active for Anna Records, owned by Gwen and Anna Gordy, that Gaye met their brother Berry Gordy, Jr. 

    Working first as a drummer and backup singer, Gaye began recording with Motown Records in 1961. As a person, Gaye preferred crooning and singing standards like those of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. The leaders of Motown Records, however, believed that Gaye could develop a major pop and R&B triumph. On his first single with Motown, “Let Your Conscience be Your Reference,
